Some resources are restricted to people currently affiliated with Dickinson.

Because your topic may cross over many academic disciplines, students are strongly encouraged to consult with a librarian for help with specific topics.

General Collection

Full length books on subjects relating to law and legal resources may be found in the Waidner-Spahr Library Catalog. However, because law can encompass such a wide range of topics, try combining specific terms related to your topic rather than just searching for law. You may also find the Political Science and Policy Studies Research Guides helpful.

Reference Sources

The New Oxford Companion to the Law - REF K48 .N48 2008 - Alphabetical, encyclopedic-style entries describing various legal terms and issues for a "non-lawyer." Entries include relevant cross-references and citations. Work also provides tables of cases, legislation, and conventions and treaties.

Black's Law Dictionary - REF KF156 .B53 2004 - Alphabetical definitions of key legal terms for around the world, with a focus on the United States and Western Europe. Entries include cross-references and relevant case citations.

Oxford Companion to American Law - REF KF154 .O96 2002 - Alphabetical entries of issues and terms in American Law with cross-references and bibliographic references. Contains a case index and general index.

Major Databases

Lexis-Nexis - Academic Universe Access to hundreds of newspapers from around the world, plus a wealth of legal, business, medical, and reference information.

PAIS International Index access to journal articles, book chapters, reports, and government publications from 120 countries. The coverage ranges from 1972 to present, with some full-text.

Legal Information Institute A resource provided by Cornell University School of Law offering public legal information. It includes: the U.S. Constitution; the full-text of U.S. code; congressional material; supreme court opinions; states constitutions, statues and related legislative material. Earliest coverage begins in 1990 going to the present. Full-text.

Other Databases that Include Legal Information

JSTOR An interdisciplinary archive of over 600 journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Project Muse A multi-disciplinary database of full text articles from scholarly journals in both humanities and social sciences. Most journals covered are up to date. Can be used as complementary to JStor as the latter covers mostly archival issues.

GPO (Government Printing Office) Government Documents Covers all types of U.S. government documents published since 1976. Includes citations with some links to full text. Print documents are available in our library, the State Library in Harrisburg, and via interlibrary loan (ILLiad).

Access to Archival Databases Online gateway to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) of the Federal government.

Congressional Universe (Lexis Nexis) Contains congressional publications, committee prints, Congressional hearings, House and Senate documents and reports, legislative histories, bill tracking, and full-text public law. Coverage range: 1969-present. Majority is Full-Text.

CQ Weekly Provides a weekly report on issues in Congress, as well as the status of proposed legislation, committee and floor activity, debates and roll-call votes. Covers a date range of 1983 to the present and has full-text access.
