The following provides a list of resources to assist you with research in political science.

The first section deals with resources that will be generally applicable and useful for most topics. The following sections suggest additional resources for specific sub-topics in political science.

Some resources are restricted to people currently affiliated with Dickinson.

Because Political Science research can cross over many academic disciplines (such as History, Sociology, or Economics) students are strongly encouraged to consult with a librarian for help with specific topics.

Full length books on subjects relating to Political Science may be found in the Waidner-Spahr Library Catalog. However, because Political Science can encompass such a wide range of topics, try combining specific terms related to your topic rather than just searching for Political Science.

The encyclopedia of political science comprehensively examines the central ideas, concepts, and frameworks underlying the study of politics and highlights the intersections of politics with other disciplines. International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences 
This digital version of the nine-volume set provides an overview of a variety of social science topics, as well as a bibliography and cross-linking to related topics. It also provides biographical information on scholars in social science fields.
Encyclopedia of U.S. Political History
The encyclopedia is organized around seven time periods that correspond to key eras in American history. This chronological organization enables users to trace themes over time or delve deeply into the interconnected elements of a particular era.
The Blackwell Dictionary of Political Science: A User's Guide to its Terms

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts 
CSA Worldwide Political Science Abstracts provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the international serials literature in political science and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration / policy.
Political Science Complete  
Subject coverage includes comparative politics, humanitarian issues, international relations, law and legislation, and political theory. Coverage Range: 1960s-present, some Full-Text.
Points of View Reference Center
Designed to assist researchers in understanding the full scope of controversial subjects. Useful as a guide to debate, developing arguments, writing position papers, and for development of critical thinking skills. Each Points of View Essay includes a series of questions and additional material to generate further thought. Also included are thousands of supporting articles from the world’s top political and societal publications.
CQ Press Electronic Library 
Searches across all of the CQ Press electronic resources, including CQ Research, CQ Weekly, and the CQ Press electronic editions of reference books.
PAIS International 
Index access to journal articles, book chapters, reports, and government publications from 120 countries. The coverage ranges from 1972 to present, with some full-text.
Peace Research Abstracts
Covers essential areas related to peace research, including conflict resolution, international affairs, and peace psychology.
Praeger Security International
The world's largest full-text electronic resource on international security, containing books, expert commentary, reports and primary documents from foreign policy, military, and security professionals. Covers security-related topics such as terrorism, economic development, diplomacy, and international crisis response.

JSTOR  
An interdisciplinary archive of over 600 journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Project Muse 
A multi-disciplinary database of full text articles from scholarly journals in both humanities and social sciences. Most journals covered are up to date. Can be used as complementary to JStor as the latter covers mostly archival issues.
Social Science Citation Index 
A multidisciplinary index to the journal literature and conference proceedings of the social sciences. Also has the capacity to conduct a cited reference search and create a citations map. Covers publications 1965 to present . Gives access to citations only, not full text.
Social Sciences Full Text 
Covers English-language periodicals, published in the Unites States or internationally, in sociology, anthropology, psychology, geography, economics, political science, and law. Indexes material from 1983-present, includes abstracts for material 1984-present and contains some full-text for 1994 to present.

GPO (Government Printing Office) Government Documents  
Covers all types of U.S. government documents published since 1976. Includes citations with some links to full text. Print documents are available in our library, the State Library in Harrisburg, and via interlibrary loan (ILLiad).
Access to Archival Databases 
Online gateway to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) of the Federal government.
Congressional Publications  
Contains congressional publications, committee prints, Congressional hearings, House and Senate documents and reports, legislative histories, bill tracking, and full-text public law. Coverage range: 1969-present. Majority is Full-Text.
Constitutions, Treaties, and Official Declarations 
An index providing full-text access to international treaties, constitutions, and other political documents from around the world.
CQ Weekly 
Provides a weekly report on issues in Congress, as well as the status of proposed legislation, committee and floor activity, debates and roll-call votes. Covers a date range of 1983 to the present and has full-text access.

Lexis-Nexis - Academic Universe  
Access to hundreds of newspapers from around the world, plus a wealth of legal, business, medical, and reference information.
ProQuest  
Covers all disciplines including social science, humanities, arts, literature and so on. Entries contain value-added content from a wide range of sources including newspapers, periodicals and books.
CQ Researcher
Issues a weekly analysis on broad-ranging topics from the news. Each report focuses on a single issues and is written by a journalist. Covers a date range of 1991 to the present and has full-text access
World News Connection
A news translation service produced by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) for the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Service, a government agency which monitors and translates newspapers, radio and television broadcasts, and official statements of foreign governments.
Alternative Press Index
Contains citations and some full-text articles from alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers, and magazines. It is international in scope with its central focus on socialism, national liberation, labor, indigenous peoples, gays, lesbians, feminism, ecology, democracy, and anarchism. Covers material from 1991 to the present. Click on the "Get It" button to access full-text when available.

Pew Research Center for the People and the Press
Offers survey reports and datasets from the organization.
Gallup Organization  
The website provides some access to public opinion research conducted by the Gallup Organization.
Polling the Nations 
Provides access to over 14,000 surveys conducted in the United States, as well as countries around the world. It includes surveys from a variety of pollsters and detailed information on the questions. The surveys are from 1986 to present, and are available in full-text.
The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research
Archives thousands of polls and surveys from the United States and some 70 foreign countries undertaken by many polling organizations on a very wide range of topics.
SmartVoter-Unbiased Election Information
Smart Voter provides nonpartisan information on elections and voting.
Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S, Presidential Elections
Maps and election data for presidential elections from 1789. Electoral vote from 1789, popular vote from 1824, county data for most recent elections. Some primary election data.
ANES-American National Election Studies
Data and statistics on elections, public opinion, and political participation in U.S. elections from 1948. Datasets may be downloaded from the site.
Voting America - United States Politics, 1840-2008
Voting America examines long-term patterns in presidential election politics in the United States from the 1840s to today as well as some patterns in recent congressional election politics.

Searches both statistical tables and publications summarizing statistical findings in a variety of social science disciplines. U.S. Census Bureau 
Information about demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics of the United States population, as well as business, industry and trade data.
FedStats
Official statistics collected and published by more than 100 Federal agencies on the full range of official statistical information available to the public from the Federal Government.

LII Legal Information Institute
Cornell Law School in Ithaca, NY free law documents database. Collaborative work of publishers, legal scholars, computer scientists, government agencies, and other groups and individuals that promote open access to law documents.
Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States
The Public Papers of the Presidents is published by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) and is the official publication of United States Presidents' public writings, addresses, and remarks.
The American Presidency Project
The American Presidency Project contains: The Messages and Papers of the Presidents: Washington - Taft (1789-1913); The Public Papers of the Presidents:Hoover to G.W. American Memory from the Library of Congress
A large and growing collection of digitized manuscript, print, photographic, and mapping materials for United States history. Includes collections as varied as documents from the First Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention to books and pamphlets on women suffrage.
