Dictionaries and Grammars

The Library's collection of Italian dictionaries and grammar texts can be found in the Reference Stacks (on the main floor near the main entrance - see map) within this call number range: PC 1001-1977.

Oxford Paravia Italian dictionary, English-Italian, Italian-English - REF PC1640 .O94 2001 - A good bilingual dictionary.

Il Devoto-Oli : vocabolario della lingua italiana - REF PC1625 .D4 2007 - A good Italian dictionary for exploring meanings, derivations, and usage information.

Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca - An online comprehensive dictionary with quotations. Entirely in Italian.

Italian Grammar at About.com - A very thorough grammatical reference site.

Italian Verb Conjugator - A useful site for review and reference.

Encyclopedias

Most of the Library's collection of Italian encyclopedias can be found in the Reference Stacks (on the main floor near the main entrance - see map) within these call number ranges:

Encyclopedia of Contemporary Italian Culture - REF DG450 .E53 2000 - A good general encyclopedia dealing with post-WWII Italy.

Sapere.it - An online multimedia encyclopedia.

Italian Wikipedia - The Italian language version of this collaborative encyclopedia.

Dictionary of Italian Literature - Available Online. This reference covers authors from the 12th to 20th centuries, including contemporary poets, screenwriters, and journalists.

The Feminist Encyclopedia of Italian Literature - REF PQ4063 .F45 1997 - Contains entries summarizing feminist thought about authors, schools, movements, genres, and other topics related to Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the present.

Italian Film : A Who's Who - REF PN1998.2 .S74 1994 - An index of personal credits for approximately 5000 Italian and foreign actors and filmmakers.

Books

Dickinson Library Catalog - Note that, by using the drop-down menus, you can limit your search by language, format (useful for finding DVDs), and location (for instance, if you are looking for an encyclopedia, you might want to change the location to "Reference Stacks").

Books in the Library are shelved by call number in the Main and Reference Stacks (shelves). Most books dealing with Italian and Italian literature have call numbers within these ranges:

Language: PC 1001-1977
Literature: PQ 4001-5999

Books on Italian history and culture usually have call numbers beginning with DG.

Google Book Search - Particularly useful for tracking down quotations, Google Book Search is a tool that searches the full text of books that Google scans and stores in its digital database. Google Book Search allows public-domain works and other out-of-copyright material to be downloaded in PDF format.

Scholarly Journal Articles

Use the databases below to find scholarly articles on a variety of topics.

MLA International Bibliography (Modern Language Association) - The premier scholarly index for literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.

Literature Criticism Online - Contains a range of modern and historical views on authors and their works across regions, eras and genres from the classical period to the present.

Film Literature Index - Annually indexes 150 film and television periodicals from 30 countries. The periodicals range from the scholarly to the popular. The FLI Online contains approximately 700,000 citations to articles, film reviews, and book reviews published between 1976-2001.

Historical Abstracts - Historical Abstracts covers materials treating all aspects of world history, except the United States and Canada, from 1450 to the present.

JSTOR - An interdisciplinary archive of over 600 journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Italinemo - Italian Studies Periodicals from 2000 to the present.

Literature

Here are some collections of Italian literature and related research resources.

Duecento: la poesia italiana dalle origini a Dante - A digital archive of Italian poetry.

Biblioteca dei Classici Italiani - A great selection of Italian literary texts, from the origins to the present.

Biblioteca della Letteratura Italiana - A large digital library of Italian literature. All texts are in PDF format.

IntraText Digital Library - A collection of primary texts in Italian and other modern and ancient languages.

Bibliotheca Augustana - Bibliotheca Italica - A collection of primary texts in Italian and several other languages.

Princeton Dante Project - A digital publication of all of Dante's work, with commentaries, translations, audio, and more.

Decameron Web - A digital version of Boccaccio's Decameron with a tremendous amount of accompanying material.

Italia Libri- A web site dedicated to Italian literature, which makes available biographies of over 100 Italian authors from Dante to the present. Critical comments and overviews of hundreds of individual works of literature are also presented.

History

EuroDocs - Western European primary historical documents that are transcribed, reproduced in facsimile, or translated. They shed light on key historical happenings within the respective countries and within the broadest sense of political, economic, social, and cultural history. The order of documents is chronological wherever possible.

Art

Grove Art Online - Grove Art Online provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols.) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, ed. Hugh Brigstocke (2001). Grove Art offers ongoing additions of new and updated articles, over 3,000 thumbnail art images and line drawings displayed in the text of articles, extensive image links, and sophisticated search and navigation tools.

ARTstor - A repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data.

Music

Naxos Music Library - A comprehensive collection of classical music available online. While listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database.

Grove Music Online - Grove Music Online is an encyclopedia that comprises the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd edition(2001), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992), and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, 2nd edition, (2002).

Film

Italian Film : A Who's Who - REF PN1998.2 .S74 1994 - An index of personal credits for approximately 5000 Italian and foreign actors and filmmakers.

Film Literature Index - Annually indexes 150 film and television periodicals from 30 countries. The periodicals range from the scholarly to the popular. The FLI Online contains approximately 700,000 citations to articles, film reviews, and book reviews published between 1976-2001.

Film and Television Literature Index - A citation-only database covering the entire spectrum of television and film writing. Subject coverage includes articles published 1930 to the present on film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews.

Many of the films, themselves, can be found in the library catalog in DVD or videotape formats (click the links for browsable lists).

Newpaper & Magazine Articles

Italian Newspapers - A long list of links to newspaper web sites.

Lexis Nexis-Academic Universe - This database is useful for finding foreign language newspaper articles. Limit your search by selecting "Major World Publications (Non-English)". Also, be careful to specify the correct date range.

World News Connection - A news translation service produced by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) for the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Service, a government agency which monitors and translates newspapers, radio and television broadcasts, and official statements of foreign governments.

Italian Magazines - A long list of links to magazine web sites.

Diasporic Italian Cultures

Resources for studying Italian populations throughout the world.

Altreitalie (1120-0413) - An online journal and website devoted to the study of Italian migrations, featuring bibliographies, statistics, images, and links to other online resources.

Voices in Italian Americana (1048-292X) - A semiannual literary and cultural review devoted to the dissemination of information concerning the contributions of and about Italian Americans to the cultural and art worlds of North America.
