Reference Collection

When looking for dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauri, atlases, or other reference materials, limit your search of the library catalog to the Reference Stacks, main level location.

Credo Reference Collection - a portal to hundreds of titles of dictionaries, encyclopedias that can be cross-searched at the same time. A good starting place for any research topic.


This is just a sample of the library's diverse collection of encyclopedias related to the Spanish and Portuguese languages and the study of Latin American and Iberian history and culture. You can limit your search to the Reference Stacks, main level location when searching the catalog for additional encyclopedias.

Cervantes Encyclopedia - Places the works of Miguel de Cervantes into context, providing plot summaries, as well as entries on the central caracters and places that appear. Also discusses scholarship and criticism of his work, as well as the artists, writers, and musicians he influenced.

Enciclopedia del español en los Estados Unidos - A useful new volume that explores the Spanish-speaking population in the United States, from the first Spanish settlements to the present.

Encyclopedia of contemporary Spanish culture - Covers Spanish culture from a variety of angles including language, literature, media, politics, economy, education, fashion, architecture, and more.

Iberia and the Americas : culture, politics, and history : a multidisciplinary encyclopedia - An overview of issues in transatlantic relations, focusing on the Iberian relationship with Spanish America and Brazil.

Mujeres en la historia de España : enciclopedia biográfica - A biographical resource on influential women in Spanish history.

Article First - A multidisciplinary database covering a wide variety of topics and fields.

CWI (Contemporary Women's Issues) - Provides global information on women in over 150 countries with particular focus on health and human rights.

Historical Abstracts - Historical Abstracts covers materials treating all aspects of world history, except the United States and Canada, from 1450 to the present.

Humanities Full Text - Covers journal articles in the humanities, archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, history, journalism and communications, linguistics, literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, and religion.

JSTOR - An interdisciplinary archive of over 600 journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

PAIS International - Provides selective subjects and bibliographic access to periodicals, books, hearings, reports, gray literature, government publications, Internet resources, and other publications from 120 countries. (Public Affairs Information Service)

PAISArchive - The Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS) is a retrospective database chronicling global public policy and social issues.

Project Muse - Covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many others.

Academic Search Complete - Covers all disciplines including social science, humanity, arts, literature and so on.

WorldCat A catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide. Use this to locate books the library does not own.

SCIELO This is an interdisciplinary database, primarily within the sciences, of interest to people who can read Spanish and Portuguese. The database covers titles from eleven different countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Spain, and Venezuela. There are 892 freely accessible e-journals available with more than half of those available up to the present issue.

Literature Criticism Online - An extensive curated compilation of literary commentary representing a range of modern and historical views on authors and their works across regions, eras and genres.

MLA International Bibliography - The premier scholarly index for literature, language, linguistics, and folklore. (Modern Language Association)

Dictionary of Literary Biography -An authoritative source of literary biographies covering writers worldwide.

Times Literary Supplement -Full text database of the renowned literary journal. Caution: the database only allows one user at a time.


Art Full Text - Offers full text plus abstracts and indexing of an international array of peer-selected publications.

ArtStor - A repository of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences.

Grove Art Online - Provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols.) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, ed. Hugh Brigstocke (2001). Grove Art offers ongoing additions of new and updated articles, over 3,000 thumbnail art images and line drawings displayed in the text of articles, and extensive image links.


Film Literature Index - Annually indexes 150 film and television periodicals from 30 countries. The periodicals range from the scholarly to the popular. The FLI Online contains approximately 700,000 citations to articles, film reviews, and book reviews published between 1976-2001.

Film and Television Literature Index

A comprehensive bibliographic database covering the entire spectrum of television and film writing. Subject coverage includes film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews. Covers articles published since 1930.

Caribbean Search - A multi-disciplinary database of English-language articles pertinent to the countries and people of the Caribbean region. Coverage Range: Mid 1990s-present. Full text.

Clase Periodica - Indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences, humanities, science and technology.

Handbook of Latin American Studies - An annotated bibliography to materials on Latin America and covering topics in both the social sciences and humanities.

HAPI Online - Indexes journals published in Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Also indexes journals published in other countries if the topic includes Latin America or Hispanics in the US.

Latin American Network Information Center - A useful gateway to Internet-based information on Latin America, created by the University of Texas at Austin.

Latin American Open Archives Portal - A database of working documents, pre-prints, research papers, statistical documents, and other difficult-to-access materials typically published by research institutes, non-governmental organizations, and peripheral agencies that are not controlled by commercial publishers.

Oxford Latin American Economic History Database - This database compiles statistical data on a range of economic and social indicators in 20 countries for the period 1900-2000.

Political Database of the Americas - Offers information about institutions and political processes, national constitutions, branches of government, elections, political constitutional studies, and other subjects related to the Americas.

Vistas - This website provides a gallery of more than 100 color images, interpretive essays, and a searchable bibliography on visual culture in Spanish America.

Iberian Studies

EuroDocs - Western European primary historical documents that are transcribed, reproduced in facsimile, or translated. They shed light on key historical happenings within the respective countries and within the broadest sense of political, economic, social and cultural history.

Iberian Studies Web - Provides access to scholarly resources in Iberian Studies (for Spain, Portugal and Andorra).

CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) - The source for theory and research in international affairs including economic information, and map and country data.

Country Studies / Area Handbooks - On-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress as part of the Country Studies/Area Handbook Series sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army.

Ethnic News Watch - Covers news, culture and history from publications of the ethnic, minority, and native press.

Lexis-Nexis - Academic Universe - Access hundreds of newspapers from around the world.

World News Connection - A news translation service produced by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) for the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Service, a government agency which monitors and translates newspapers, radio and television broadcasts, and official statements of foreign governments.
