Chandler, Mary

Chandler never married because of a spinal deformity; she set up and ran a milliner's shop to help support her family. Published at the encouragement of friends in 1733, her poem "Description of Bath" was very popular, reaching eight editions by 1767. The third and subsequent editions appended a number of additional poems. In the dedication, Chandler insists that she'd rather be considered a tradeswoman than a writer, and that this publication, containing "trifles" written during her "leisure hours" for her own "amusement," was intended for coterie circulation.
