Si ch’ i’ la vo seguire Magdalena-a CapQ (abBA acCA adDA...)

Language:

it

Composer:

Razzi/ Layolle, Cara

Lauda:

Ave Maria d’amore
CapQ (abBA cdDc...)

Notes:

note: The cantus of the cc. setting found in Rz1563 is borrowed, intact, from the 2nd superius of Francesco Layolle’s 5-part ‘Si ch’io la vo seguire nessun’altra offesa’; ed. D’AcconeMFR, iii, no. 19. Cc. ed. in Mancuso, no. 75 (Rz1563). Cara’s musically independent 4-part setting of the same text set by Layolle is in PetF/xi, and text and music are ed. in LuisiFr, no. 1, and in PrizerCP, 449-51 (see also BoormanOP, 1020); this text is formally identical to several others in the cc. sources with a similar incipit, suggesting that these ‘Si ch’i’ la vo seguire’ texts are interrelated. See this cc. title as a lauda with a modo proprio setting.

Lauda:

Viva, viva in orazione-a
BaMn2/8:8 (xx ababbccx)

Notes:

note: original text was probably the carnival song, the Canzona degli uomini salvatichi: ‘Viva viva la ragione’, for which Razzi transmits the a3 music, ed. MaceyS, 23-31 (where a third text is added to the cluster of related texts: ‘Viva, viva in nostro core’); Mancuso, 713-20. See MaceyB, 56, 64-6 (w/music ed. on 65). Text in Gall4 without cc., and incipit ‘Viva, viva l’orazione’.

Lauda:

Deh dolce redentore Jesù soccorri
BaG (xYyX AbAbbCcX)

Lauda Poet:

Lorenzo
Tornabuoni

Notes:

note: text & music ed. Mancuso, 680-7. See MaceyB, 113-15, where Razzi’s setting is edited and underlaid with the text of Savonarola’s ‘Alma che sì gentile sei per amor’ (which along with d’Astore’s ‘Alma che sì gentile/ti fé’ have poetic forms and rhyme schemes identical to ‘Deh dolce redentor’). Music ed. with all 3 texts in MaceyS, 71-9; texts ed. & trans. xlviii-l. Gall4/Pal120/R196 transmit variant incipit ‘O dolce redentor’, and no cc. MaceyB reconstructs the chain of cc. links: d’Astore’s lauda had its own setting or could be sung to the tune of ‘O benigno Signore’ (Gall2); no music for ‘O benigno Signore’ survives, but in BNF, J.VIII.5 (late 16thc), ‘Signore soccorri aita’ (see Bartolomeo’s a4 setting) could be sung to ‘O benigno Signore’ or ‘O dolce redentore’. Thus, the setting in Rz1563 is a possible source for all of these texts.
