The piece is in fact a contrafactum of Arcadelt’s 4-part madrigal (the music of which is faithfully preserved here) ‘Madonna il volto mio pallido.’

The cantus part of the lauda is based on the melody of ‘La pastorella si leva per tempo’ found in the mid-sixteenth century collection of dance tunes, M108. The cc. text is found in Rome, Biblioteca Angelica Ms. 2435, no. 143, where it is organized in 5-line strophes.
