Notes:

note: cc. in Gall1 = ‘I’ ti riveggio bello’, possibly a corruption of the cc. incipit cited in all other sources for this lauda. For ed. of cc. text, see V. Cian, Ballate e strambotti nel sec. XV tratti da un codice trevisiano, «GSLI» IV, 1884, 42-3; the first half of each line is drawn from various psalm texts in the vulgate, while the second half is in Italian.

Notes:

note: Carnival song (mascherata)--’Canzona delle forese [di Narcetri]’. Carnival song ed. BruscagliTCC, i, 15-17; OrvietoCC, 73-5 (ca. 1474-78). Carnival song linked also to Lorenzo’s ‘Quant’è grande’ and possibly the latter’s music in Rz1563 & RC395. Lorenzo’s lauda is ed. in ToscaniL, 93-4, and in DucciniL, 190-95, with extensive commentary. GhisiCC, 93-4, appears to distinguish between two ‘forese’ carnival songs, an anon. ‘Canzona della forese’ as the cc. for ‘O peccatore’, and Lorenzo’s ‘Canzona delle forese di Narcetri’ as the cc. for Lorenzo’s ‘Quant’è grande la bellezza’; this is possible, given the formal compatibility of the latter pair, and the formal incompatibility of Lorenzo’s carnival song and his ‘O peccatore’. It is possible that the related prints Pal120 and R196 mistakenly provided ‘forese’ instead of ‘fornai’ as the cc. indication.
