Notes:

note: carnival song (mascherata)--Canzona de’ Confortini (c.1474-8?). Carnival song text ed. BruscagliTCC, i, 3; OrvietoCC, 59-61. MaceyB, 34-8, 47-8, w/music adopted from Razzi1563, ‘Madre de’ peccatori’ (ed. Mancuso, no. 12) and recorded on enclosed CD; see MaceyNC, 154-9 for fuller discussion of this proposed musical setting. Music ed. MaceyS, 15-19 & MaceyNC, 164-5, with texts of both carnival song and ‘Madre de’ peccatori’. The attribution of a 3-part musical setting of ‘Berricuocoli’ to Isaac was made by Anton Francesco Grazzini (‘il Lasca’) in his Tutti i trionfi, carri, mascherate o canti carnascialeschi....Florence, [Tolentino] 1559, fols. aiir-aiiir.

Lauda Poet:

Notes:

note: GhisiCC, 94. Cc. is apparently a carnival song, possibly the Trionfo d’amore e gelosia, ‘Dal nostro acerbo, inevitabil fato’ (text ed. SingletonCC, 155-6; BruscagliTCC, ii, 465; music in BR230), though the poetic form (7: 7/11 [ABaBaCC]) is not compatible with Giambullari’s lauda.

BR230 transmits versions by Isaac (a3), Pintello (a3), & Bartolomeo Organista (a4; also in BR337 & Bas2440). Music of Bartolomeo version ed. Lorenzo Strozzi’s closely related ballata text, ‘Questo mostrarsi lieta a tutte l’hore’, is preserved in settings by Pisano (EinsteinIM, iii, 3), Layolle (ed. Ave Maria stella matutina
BaG:11 (xyyx ababbccx)

Notes:

note: ‘La canzona de’ visi addietro’, Laurentian carnival song for 1490. MaceyB, 33, 38,145; MaceyLC, 477-8. Text ed. BruscagliTCC, i, 23-4; OrvietoCC, 85-6 (where title is ‘Canzona de’visi addrieto’, and incipit ‘Le cose al contradio vanno’). Penned into the margin of R196 is ‘f. mascherata’. The music and text in BR230 occupies the last extant folio, and is mutilated (some text, and music for the soprano part remain); both BecheriniCCat, 67-8 and GhisiCC, 96, 190 identified this song as Jacopo da Bientina’s ‘Canto di uomini che vanno col viso volto di dietro’, but from the remaining text it is possible to identify this as Lorenzo’s Canzona de’ visi addrieto’.
