The Compagnia del Broncone was a group of gentlemen under the leadership of Lorenzo de’ Medici (grandson of Magnifico). Music ed. in GallettiFFM, no.12, & GhisiCC, 76. Text ed. SingletonCC, 250; text & music ed. & discussed in more detail in CummingsP, 22-30. Castellani’s lauda not to be confused with Pandolfini’s of very similar title. For a description of Nardi’s float, see GallettiFFM, xv.

Lauda:

Madre del redemptor vergine pura soccorri-c BaG (XyyX AbAbbccX)

Lauda Poet:

Clemente Pandolfini

Notes:

note: alternate cc. in R196 = ‘Donne per elezione’ (Canzona de’ pastori), music by Baccio degli Organi in BR230, BR337, M117. Music transmitted in both Ferr84 and Rz1563 is Baccio’s carnival song, ‘Donne per electione’, which also serves as a cc. for this same lauda. This suggests that Baccio’s music became strongly associated with Belcari’s very popular lauda

La gran memoria dell’età passata 7:7/11 (ABaBAcC DEdEDfF...)

Poet:

Language:

Lauda:

Vergine gloriosa in ciel beata
7:7/11 (ABaBAcC DEdEDfF...)

Lauda Poet:

Castellano
Castellani

Notes:

note: CattinCC, 202-3, & CattinR, 17; incipit in R196 is ‘Contempla in quanta altezza se’ salita’, a carnival song by Jacopo Nardi. This is the ‘Canzona del trionfo di Camillo’, or ‘Trionfo della fama e della gloria’ (ed. SingletonCC, 251-2), and is linked to Giovanni di Medici (Pope Leo X) for feast of San Giovanni in 1514. However, the poetic forms of cc. and lauda are incompatible, and CattinCC, 203 notes identity of rhyme scheme and form between ‘Vergine gloriosa’ and another Carnival song, the anonymous Trionfo delle tre Parche (‘La gran memoria dell’età passata’, which is the ‘secondo coro’ of this Trionfo); text ed. SingletonCC, 199-200, with music in BR230, 90v.
