Ecco’l Messia-b BaMn:7/5 (xX ABABBX)

Poet:

Lucrezia Tornabuoni

Language:

it

Lauda:

Ecce quam bonum et quam jocundum BaMz3/5:7/5 (xxX ABABBX)

Lauda Poet:

Luca Bettini

Notes:

note: on the Piagnoni overtones of ‘Ecce quam bomum’ & its dissemination in settings by Verdelot, Mouton, Richafort, et al. see MaceyB, 23ff, 124ff, passim. Music ed. w/Bettini’s text in MaceyS, 84-5. A 4-part setting of ‘Ecce quam bonum’ in Rz1563 in musically unrelated to the ‘Ben venga’ group, and sets only the Latin verses from Ps. 132:1. Razzi provides two settings of ‘Ecco’l Messia’, for 2 & 3 parts. The 2-part setting is most suitable as a cc. for ‘Ecce quam bonum’; the 3-part setting is a contrafact of ‘Ben venga Maggio’. After the Latin refrain (of 5+5+9 syllables), Bettini’s Italian verses in 7-syllable lines begin with the incipit ‘In quanto è gran dolcezza’.

Notes:

note: see ‘Ben venga Maggio’ for orginal cc., though this group of texts in M365 is more removed from the ‘Ben venga’ tradition. RC395 preserves 2-part setting w/’Ecco’l signore’ text (ed. thus in MaceyS, 83-4; see also MaceyB, 125-6).
