Chi veder brama in terra un serafino BaG (XyyX AbAbbccX)

Lauda Poet:

Serafino Razzi

Notes:

note: RostirollaB, 712; Carboni-ZiinoLM, 279. Music ed. Mancuso, no. 47 (Rz1563); RostirollaTL, 28 (which differs from the setting in Rz1563); RC395 (tenor only, which matches tenor of Rz1563). Cc. in M365 attr. to A. Bettini. ‘Chi veder’ = lauda to San Francesco. Ferr84 melody is a version of Razzi’s melody; both ed. in Carboni-ZiinoLM, 329. 1589/2 transmits a3 setting identical to Anim1577, except with shortened candential melismas for the first stanza, and (as in Rz1563) a musically independent ‘seconda parte’ for the 2nd stanza. See ‘Io mi trovo’ as modo proprio.

Dolce, felice, lieta notte-a
CapQ:7/5 (ABBc CDDe...)

Lauda Poet:

Serafino Razzi

Notes:

note: Nativity lauda. RostirollaB, 697-8. Text & music of Rz1563 ed. Mancuso, 441-3; facs. of Anim1577 in RostirollaTL, 29. Rz1563, transmits only the cantus part, and this is a contrafactum of Pesenti’s frottola, ‘Tu te lamenti a torto’ (the cc. given in RC395); the 8-measure setting of a sing quatrain is ed. in CesariLF, no. XLVII. There are vague similarities between the cantus melodies of the Roman (Anim1577,1583/3, 1589/2) and Razzi (a1) versions. Unrelated in text or music to Verdelot’s setting of Machiavelli’s canzona, ‘O dolce nocte’.

Levate su pastori-b
CapQ (ABBc CDDe...)

Lauda Poet:

Clemente Pandolfini?

Notes:

note: RostirollaB, 717. Music à3 ed. RostirollaTL, 43 (with facs.; Anim1577). See ‘Levate su pastori’ as cc.. There is a similar cantus in Rz1563 w/text ‘Leviam’i nostri cori’ (ed. Mancuso, no. 31), which also appears to be related to the music in Rz1563 for ‘Io sento al cor conforto’ (the latter is paired with ‘Levate su pastori’ as cc. models for Razzi’s lauda ‘Oggi lieto e giocondo). 1589/2 transmits a3 setting nearly identical to that of Anim1577, but with Razzi’s text ‘Dolce felice e lieta notte’ (c. 12; and cc indication that text of ‘Levate su pastori’ may be sung to this music). ‘Levate su pastori’ and similar melody transmitted in 1689/2, ed. LuisiLG, ii, 164.

Alternate cc. = ‘La madre tornò dal santo’ (Gall2, R196), though this may refer to the same piece; the first 4 lines of the secular text are: ‘Giù per la villa lunga/la bella se ne va/la ma’ torno dal santo/trovo il figliuol mal.’ Lauda text copied by Savonarola into CB. 1577 Roman version ed. in RostirollaTL, 46 (+facs.). Similar setting, w/slight variants, transmitted in 1589/2.
