The music and text in BR230 occupies the last extant folio, and is mutilated (some text, and music for the soprano part remain); both BecheriniCCat, 67-8 and GhisiCC, 96, 190 identified this song as Jacopo da Bientina’s ‘Canto di uomini che vanno col viso volto di dietro’, but from the remaining text it is possible to identify this as Lorenzo’s Canzona de’ visi addrieto’.

Incipit in ModF.9.9 is ‘Laudato idio die usi [usci?] de le tue trame/o bella cosa che è la libertade’, and the similarity of rhyme, form and subject matter suggest that this secular poem was the model for the lauda, and its music the intended cc. source. La Face/BianconiGS, 291 lists a title in a concordant literary source as ‘Laudato Dio che son fuor di toi trame’, much closer to that given in the Florentine cc. sources.

GhisiCC, 93-4, appears to distinguish between two ‘forese’ carnival songs, an anon. ‘Canzona della forese’ as the cc. for ‘O peccatore’, and Lorenzo’s ‘Canzona delle forese di Narcetri’ as the cc. for Lorenzo’s ‘Quant’è grande la bellezza’; this is possible, given the formal compatibility of the latter pair, and the formal incompatibility of Lorenzo’s carnival song and his ‘O peccatore’. It is possible that the related prints Pal120 and R196 mistakenly provided ‘forese’ instead of ‘fornai’ as the cc. indication.
