Lauda Poet:

Notes:

note: See CattinNF, 202. See ‘I’ vedo ben’ as cc. for ‘Ave del cielo’ & ‘Salve regina di misericordia’ for possible musical settings associated with ‘Ave tempio’ (an Ave Maria acrostic). Settings of Belcari’s text ed. CattinG, no.26 & LuisiLG, ii, 152-3 (Grey, but w/cc text underlaid as well); JeppesenL, 136-7 (PetL/i). Different music in each source. Razzi transmits music with text ‘Lodate fanciulletti’in suon’e canto’ (the 1st tercet of which uses the same rhymes as ‘Ave tempio’), followed by six other texts (Belcari’s ‘Ave del verbo’ & ‘Salve Regina’, plus four Razzi laude: ‘Ave stella del mar’, ‘Magnifica il Signor’, ‘Svegliati hormai’, & ‘Riposatevi in pace’), all in the form of CapT:11. Belcari’s ‘Ave Maria acrostic and Salve Regina pair are probably modeled on a very similar pairing by Giustinian; see LuisiLG, i, 356-7.

Notes:

note: see ‘I’ vedo ben’ and ‘Lodate fanciulletti’ (as cc. for ‘Ave del cielo’ & ‘Salve regina di misericordia’) for musical settings associated with ‘Ave tempio’ (an ‘Ave Maria’ acrostic). Lauda probably = ‘Ave del verbo eterno genitrice’, which is the standard Ave Maria paraphrase paired with the Salve Regina in most Belcari mss. (incl. M690); see CattinR, no.60.

Notes:

note: cc. refers possibly to ‘Ave Maria stella matutina’ (BaG:11), transmitted in cc. sources like Gall4 that are more or less contemporary with CS1548. Another source may be the ‘Ave del ciel regina/e de’ celesti’ in 1600/5, with music by Michel’ Angelo Cancino; see RostirollaB, 683.

Notes:

note: see Diederichs, 54 for a comparison of the two texts, where she shows that a text with a title (‘Avrai tu mai pietà donna crudel di me’) very similar to Landini’s (‘Ara’ tu pietà mai di me, o giovnetta’) is the more likely cc. model, since its rhyme scheme is nearly identical to that of ‘Volgi li occhi’.

The intended cc. for ‘Mercè’ may in fact be a different secular ballata with a similar title, ‘Arai tu mai pietà donna crudel’; see this title as a cc. for the lauda ‘Volgi li occhi tuoi in qua’.

Notes:

note: CattinNR, 264; CattinCC, 209, music ed. 222-4. Text ed. SingletonCC, 261-3. Carnival song--’Canzona d’anime dannate’. Cattin mentions also that the ‘Canzona di pellegrini trufatori’ (‘Pellegrin, donne, in questo abito strano’) matches closely the meter and rhyme of the lauda text. R196 indicates this lauda has a modo proprio, possibly a reference to the music of Bernardino’s carnival song, though R196 also gives ‘Anime siamo’ as a cc. for the lauda ‘Peregrin tutti in questo mondo siano’. It is possible, therefore, that the lauda ‘Peregrin tutti in questo mondo siano’ is based on the carnival song ‘Pellegrin, donne, in questo abito strano’, though no cc. source testifies directly to this link.
